STRONG ROOTS CONGO

Vision & MissionVision: To see local communities, indigenous peoples, and wildlife thrive together in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Mission: To simultaneously conserve gorilla populations and support local communities through the empowerment and engagement of local indigenous peoples and communities in conservation practices. |
Our ConnectionStrong Roots is working to create a corridor of community forests that connect the Kahuzi-Biega National Park and the Itombwe Nature Reserve. Once designated by the government as a community forest, the corridor would promote the long-term connectivity and protection of Grauer's gorilla populations in the region. The Primate Pathways project supports Strong Roots' vision through the assessment of gorilla movement and community sentiments within the proposed corridor area. Investigating gorilla habitat connectivity and conducting an in-depth analysis of community sentiments will allow our team to identify the trade-offs between gorilla conservation and community well-being. Our involvement with Strong Roots will ultimately help produce the necessary documentation and conservation plans required by the government to legally establish these forests.
